Handheld Power Rangers: Lightspeed Rescue Developer: Crave Entertainment | Publisher: Crave Entertainment
Rating: B-Reno
Type: Action Skill Level: Novice
Players: 1 Available: Now

You know, as a kid in grade 8, I thought the Power Rangers was a damn good show. Lots of fighting, huge mechs, and of course... Kimberly :) I still find it a little bearable to watch, especially with a younger brother who watches it constantly, but I find it doesn't have the same lustre or polish to it that the original series had.

Like the original series, the Power Rangers must defend the Earth (or rather, their little hometown of Mariner Bay) from the clutches of the evil Diabolico. Using their super powers and the help of their trusty Omegazords, the Power Rangers all have but their hands full with this new menace to society.

Graphically, the game is decent at best. There's nothing that shines out, but everything runs just smoothly. The sprites are of decent size so they won't make you squint, nor are they too large that the take up 1/2 of the screen. When fighting in your Zords, there's hardly anything to look at than you and your opponent... but I guess that's what happens when you have the limitations of the Gameboy platform.

The gameplay is solid, but again it's nothing to write home about. The rescue missions are done nicely and there are some great level designs throughout the entire game - but some are seemingly designed to frustrate the player to no end. There can be some tricky jumps for younger gamers (which the game is obviously geared towards), although they won't prove hard for the seasoned platform gamer.

As a game for the younger generation (re: your little brothers or sister), this game is absolutely perfect for them. It provides a decent challenge (although a little on the frustrating side) and the chance for them to assume the role of their favourite Power Ranger. For a dude like me, if you can get past the kiddie licensing you'll find an extremely easy game that you'll most likely beat within a couple of hours. Stay away unless you're really bored. :)
